Aviation safety professionals, particularly Air Navigation Service Providers, are kindly invited to share experience and good practices regarding the issue described below. RVR is not Visibility. The FAA helps us confuse runway visual range (RVR) with flight visibility, but they’re different concepts. RVR is an instrumentally-derived value at a runway. Flight visibility is a pilot-observed distance in flight.

Following table is used to calculate CMV. Originally RVR was measured by a person, either by viewing the runway lights from the top of a vehicle parked on the runway threshold, or by viewing special angled runway lights from a tower at one side of the runway. The number of lights visible could then be converted to a distance to give the RVR. The intensity of the light is measured by the receiver and converted to an RVR value by the signal data converter. An RVR transmissometer established on a 250-foot baseline provides digital readouts to a minimum of 600 feet. These setups are currently being phased out.

for 2825, or 50 per cent, the RVR report was less than the visibility; for 1085, or 19 per cent, the RVR was less than half the visibility; for 951, or 17 per cent, the RVR was less than one third of the visibility; and . for 596, or 11 per cent, the RVR was less than one quarter of the visibility.

– Mark Feldman Apr 15 '19 at 1:01 At overseas locations, visibility is reported in meters, and SM is omitted. The largest reportable metric value is 9999. This value represents a visibility greater than 9000 meters (7 SM or more). To convert visibility values from meters to statute miles see Attachment 3 on page 33 or see Flight Information Handbook conversion tables. 8 METAR A blank value for RVR on the display indicates that no RVR system visibility sensor is needed for that precision point on the runway based on the instrumentation and landing category of that runway.

Disclaimer: all information presented in this video does not substitute actual study and pr For example, also taken from AC 00-45F, the 10 minute RVR for Runway 01L varying between 600 and 1,000 feet would be coded R01L/0600V1000FT. If RVR is lower than its lowest reportable value, the visual range group is preceded by an M. For example, an RVR for runway 01L of less than 600 feet is coded R01L/M0600FT. for 2825, or 50 per cent, the RVR report was less than the visibility; for 1085, or 19 per cent, the RVR was less than half the visibility; for 951, or 17 per cent, the RVR was less than one third of the visibility; and . for 596, or 11 per cent, the RVR was less than one quarter of the visibility. You also need RVR for standard takeoff minimums (1 sm visibility up to two engines, 1/2 sm visibility for three engines or more).

Following table is used to calculate CMV. The maximum RVR measured is 2000 meters and no conversion to visibility is made. As long as the published approach RVR for a given runway is met an instrument approach can be made down to the D.H. and a landing carried out.
